Works completed at Three Tuns junction

By Jon Nurse
December 21, 2012

Six weeks of road works at the busy Three Tuns junction on the A329 were completed on schedule yesterday.

Improvements to the traffic lights and road at the junction in Earley are part of a scheme coming from a £2.75 million Government grant.

The changes are designed to ease congestion and make sustainable travel more appealing.

Councillor Keith Baker, executive member of highways and planning at Wokingham Borough Council, said: “We do understand these works will have been inconvenient, but we thank motorists and residents for their patience while these improvements were being carried out.”

The Three Tuns junction now has an ‘intelligent’ traffic light system which reacts to real time traffic flows.

The improved system should cut journey times and C02 emissions, while using low energy LEDs that need less maintenance and have a lower long term cost.

Other plans in the Local Sustainable Transport Fund project are to create a new cycle infrastructure along most of the A329 and upgrade bus stops.

I went through the lights this morning. When I pulled up to the lights they changed to green very quickly as there were no other cars waiting.

The real test will be when everyone is back at work and the school runs start up again.

Look on the bright side don't be so dismissive.

A. It only cost 2.75 million. B. Those of us who use the junction regularly will not have to re-educate ourselves as nothing has changed. C. Think of all the electricity that will be saved by putting in lEDs. It would not have been possible for a man with a ladder to do the same job one evening when the road is quiet. D. We still have the extra wide pavements for cycleways (That the cyclists never use just block traffic on the road).

Wait till they start on the lights at Loddon Bridge they are going to be red amber and green i believe and that will only cost 1.3 million. Happy Christmas

So they have spent alot of money and caused alot of disruption to end up with the same layout but with with a few extra white lines and big signs stating 'New Layout' to convince us all otherwise. Why they could not do a proper scheme and widen the approach road from Woodley using the vacant land beside the wine shop that has been closed for years is down to the very limited thinking at WBC. Will they publish figures for average queue times at the same time each week before and after to show IF they have achieved anything?

Well it seems like an awful lot of work and disruption (let alone spending of our money) for very little difference that I can see other than a rephasing of the lights.
