Last chance to leave a gift for the Giving Tree

December 19, 2012

Today is the last day to drop off your present for this year’s Giving Tree appeal.

The Wokingham Times appeal, which has run for more than 10 years, gives people the chance to brighten up Christmas for some of the borough’s most vulnerable or impoverished families by giving gifts to children.

Gill McKernan, who is co-ordinating this year’s appeal, said: “It is going fantastically well. Last week we collected a van-load of gifts so it really is doing well.

“It had been doing alright but at the weekend it really kicked off, and the generosity of people has been amazing.

“People have been so kind and thoughtful with what they have bought the children.”

Giving Trees have been displayed at shops and businesses around Wokingham borough over the past three weeks.

Anyone who would like to take part should select a tag from the tree, which has the details of a present that has been requested by a charity.

They then buy the gift and return it unwrapped to the tree at a participating shop or business, where it is taken to Transform Housing and then on to the individual charity.

The organisations being helped this year are Barnardo’s Young Carers, Dingley Play Group, Transform Housing, Home Start, ASD Family Help, and the Berkshire County Blind Society. Mrs McKernan added: “On behalf of Barnardo’s I would like to thank everybody for giving because our children are going to receive some wonderful gifts this Christmas.”
