Bikers getting ready for 27th Toy Run

December 06, 2012

The roar of motorbikes will travel from Reading to Wokingham this weekend when Christian bikers take part in the 27th annual Christmas Toy Run.

A convoy of 2,000 motorcycles will meet at Foster Wheeler, in Shinfield Park, at 1pm and depart for Barnardo’s, Wokingham, at 2pm for a 3pm arrival on Sunday.

The bikers will carry gifts for needy children, from babies to teenagers, which will be donated to Barnardo’s and other children’s charities.

Drivers are warned the Toy Run may cause delays between 2pm and 3.30pm and road closures will be in place.

Roads affected are Whitley Wood Lane, Lower Earley Way between the Black Boy Roundabout and Showcase Cinema, the A329 Reading Road between the Showcase Cinema and Shute End and Rectory Road and Wiltshire Road up to High Close School.

Traffic on adjacent roads may also be affected on Sunday afternoon.

Spectators are invited to line the route and show support as the convoy passes.

To the chap dressed as Father Christmas in a pimped up Tuk Tuk, resplendent with tinsel and fairy lights, Sir, I salute you, a fabulous effort!

One of the little things that makes Wokingham a nicer place to live; these events always have a lovely spirit about them.

The signage is much better now than it used to be. I got stuck at Showcase a few years ago and was one of those irritated drivers getting stressed - but in those days we were supposed to know about it via word of mouth, so being angry was quite justified! Nobody can dispute that it is a great spectacle and for a great cause and the reality is that in running the event, it will always inconvenience drivers on the nearby roads.

A fantastic event to spectate. Its always to fun to watch the odd overly stressed car driver in their 4x4 trying to push in to the queue of the bikes. Read the signs beforehand!
