Bank raiders pounced on security guards then smashed an ATM at a building society in a busy street.
The two men attacked when G4S workers attended Nationwide, in Crowthorne High Street, just after 6.30pm last night (Wednesday).
As security officials visited to fill cash machines the robbers struck and smashed their way into the building then damaged an ATM.
But it is believed the offenders fled empty-handed after brave guards activated smoke deterrents filling the building with clouds of smoke.
Rob Taylor, branch manager of Nationwide, Crowthorne, said: "All we know is that we were broken in to last night.
"Our security service dealt with whatever happened last night.
"We are still unsure of what happened and are waiting to hear back, hopefully in the next 24 hours."
A G4S spokesman confirmed an attack was made on one of its crews last night.
He said: "Fortunately, our couriers were not injured but, as is standard practice at G4S, they have been offered counselling and management is on hand to support them and their families.
"The psychological impact that attacks of this nature can have on individuals should not be underestimated.
"We take the safety and security of our staff extremely seriously, and we work closely with the police and our technology providers to give our staff the best possible protection.
"Our staff have the right to expect to be able to go about their duties without fear of attack and we are working with the police so that those responsible for this incident can be made accountable for their actions in court."
Crowthorne High Street was cordoned off last night which caused a stir among the community and some villagers took to social networking sites to express concern.

"Poor security man attacked and bank full of smoke! Fortunately sec guard is ok I think paramedics/police on scene!!!
"It was a g4 van delivering or picking up from night safe inside the bank they parked out the front and were attacked when going in to bank!
"The attackers pulled up behind them in their car and pounced when sec man got out of his van!
"Road all closed police/ambulance/fire are there! Poor sec guard was stuck inside bank whilst full of smoke!
"Happened about an hour ago so no staff there apart from sec guard!
"Think he is ok apart from being stuck inside for a bit!! Shocking!
"The alarm is still going off which is slightly annoying!!" (sic)
Police want to speak to anyone who was in the area at this time.
Det Sgt Peter Wall, from Maidenhead CID, said: “At this stage it appears that two men forced their way into the building society as security officials were filling the ATM machine.
“The security officials were able to activate smoke deterrents and consequently we believe that the offenders left empty handed.
“I know that there were a number of people in the area around the time of the incident and I am keen to hear from anyone who saw suspicious behaviour or anyone who saw the men leave the area in a dark coloured motor vehicle.”
Anyone with any information about this incident should contact Maidenhead CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or Crimestoppers-uk.org.
The same bank was targeted by criminals when they used a digger to ram raid the branch in 2010.
