Dance lovers celebrate 69th wedding anniversary

Dance partners who have waltzed through 69 years of marriage are inviting more couples to join them on the floor.

John, known as Jack, and Thelma Clarke celebrated another year together with a dance at Woodley Sequence Dance Club on Friday.

The couple from Meachen Court in Wokingham have danced together for close to half a century.

“We are very lucky,” Mrs Clarke, 87, said. “We take everything as it comes and have a lovely family that does help. We’re still very fit which we can thank the one above for. Keeping active is the answer”

Mr Clarke, 89, met his wife when he delivered meat to her mother for the butcher and they were married Heston Church in Hounslow in 1943.

He was a driver for the army while she worked as a bus conductress.

The couple moved to the borough around 50 years ago and have been dancing in Woodley and Twyford for many years.

“I love dancing – I can’t stop dancing,” Mrs Clarke said. “My friends tell me I’m never off the floor and I’m never late.”

The Clarkes have two sons, Neil and Victor, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
