Free parking in town car parks on Saturdays before Christmas

By Julie Spencer
November 28, 2012

shoppers can park for free at some council-run car parks in Wokingham borough on the three Saturdays before Christmas.

Wokingham Borough Council is waiving the charge to encourage Christmas present hunters to shop locally, although maximum time and disabled bay restrictions will still be enforced.

Cllr Keith Baker, executive member for highways and planning, said: “I’m pleased to announce that once again the council is offering free parking at council-owned car parks this festive period to encourage people to use the borough’s shopping centres.

“We have a number of shops, both individual traders and large chain stores, in the borough’s towns and villages and we want to encourage as many people to shop locally as possible.”

Shoppers at Denmark Street must park in the council-managed section behind Anvil Court and next to Wokingham library and not behind the police station, which is privately managed and where charges will still apply.

Parking will be free on Saturday, December 8, 15 and 22, in the following council car parks: The Paddocks, Wokingham; Denmark Street (council-owned section only), Wokingham; Easthampstead Road (east and west), Wokingham; Rose Street, Wokingham; Cockpit Path, Wokingham; Headley Road, Woodley; Crockhamwell Road, Woodley; Lytham Road (east and west), Woodley; Polehampton Close, Twyford and School Lane, Wargrave.

Instead of free parking can we have a bus stop at the All Saints end of the town please. The nearest bus stop being in the middle of town makes Peach Street shopping very difficult for the elderly.

Good stuff, but unless somebody wants coffee or a meal for Christmas I'm not sure what I'd do with free parking in Wokingham. I'd rather pay to go somewhere with an array of appropriate outlets.

Though to be fair, it's probably a nice place to have a Christmas coffee or meal.
