Drivers needed for Woodley Volunteer Centre

By Jon Nurse
November 21, 2012

A volunteer driver service is not taking on new clients for only the second time in 30 years.

Woodley Volunteer Centre, which takes people to medical and other appointments, is appealing for more drivers to help it cope with more than a thousand extra jobs a year.

Chairman, John Cook, said: “We are snowed under. We have around 30 drivers but we are really under pressure.

“We’re having to put people on a waiting list for the first time.

“We have had to suspend taking on more people until January.

“Five years ago we had a similar number of drivers but we’re now doing 1,300 more jobs a year.”

In 2007 the volunteers made 2,000 trips, but in the last year they have done more than 3,300.

“We don’t mind if someone can just help once a week or once a month,” Mr Cook added. “It’s giving something back to the community.

“Wokingham Borough Council has been very supportive at reimbursing trips taken using bus passes, but now people know we are accepting them it’s led to increased demand.”
