Now Wokingham needs a Town TeamBy Laura Herbert

Traders, businesses and community groups are needed to help create a team to ensure the successful future of Wokingham town centre.
A Town Team is due to be created following Wokingham’s successful bid to receive £10,000 funding and become a Town Team Partner.
The scheme follows the failed Mary Portas’ Portas Pilot bid, which awarded towns a grant to help rejuvenate the high street.
The team will initially include Wokingham Chamber of Commerce, Wokingham Town Council and Wokingham Borough Council, but in the future other partners with ideas and commitment will also be able to join.
Mark Walton, president of the Wokingham Chamber of Commerce, said: “The Town Team needs to be a dynamic group of doers. It will be open to new ideas, and to new members, but the prerequisite for a place at the table will be a proactive, positive attitude and an ability to help get things done.
“If you have feasible ideas to help the town centre flourish now, we need you to come to this meeting or to get in touch with us.”
Although the town centre regeneration is a separate project, the team’s ideas could feed into the regeneration as it develops.
The team will also look at ideas suggested in the original Portas Pilot bid which include development of the market, more events to attract families, and greater use of technology to promote the town.
Andrew Nicholls, Wokingham Borough Council’s economic development officer, said: “Major changes will be coming to Wokingham with the regeneration, but we don’t want to sit back and wait for that.
“We want ideas now and innovation now; especially as we have £10,000 to devote to this straight away.
“Ideally, the Town Team will be a small, tight-knit partnership, which includes representatives from both the private and public sectors, together with community sector organisations.
“So far we have had positive discussions with several of Wokingham’s leading retailers, and also the Chamber of Commerce, who are all keen to get involved.”
Traders, shopkeepers, businesses, community groups and anyone interested in sharing their ideas can attend a meeting at Wokingham Town Hall, in Market Place, on Tuesday, November 27, to launch the Wokingham Town Team.
Doors open at 6pm ahead of the meeting at 6.30pm. To register a place or contribute to the town team call Mr Nicholls on (0118) 974 6018.
