Woodley Marks & Spencer decision due today

November 14, 2012

Plans to demolish a car dealership and replace it with an M&S Simply Food store in Woodley are due to be given the green light tonight.

Lateral Reading Ltd wants to build the store on the site of a derelict Volvo car dealership at Shepherd’s Hill roundabout, on the A4.

The plans have received support from people living in the area who claim the store is an improvement ‘on the current eyesore’ and offers convenient access, parking and shopping.

Wokingham Borough Council also received one letter of comment making reference to the plan’s impact on Woodley shopping centre and that the floor space for the store is too large.

Members of the council’s planning committee are recommended to approve the application at the meeting at the civic offices, in Shute End, from 7pm.

You would think that there were enough food stores in Woodley, with LIDL not long been opened.

What, about 20 feet away from the BP/M&S Garage? Soon the name will need to be changed from Sheperds hill to M&S Hill....

   What an odd comment

It’s a one off store in an area that will not become a new shopping centre as there is no other room – albeit there are a couple of other shops, but its all disjointed

Also how / why it will take people away from Woodley SC is a mystery as its only 1 shop (and not a large one at that) so will only be in competition with Waitrose, which is no bad thing but given M&S prices (ever been in the one at the BP station up there?) they should have no worries!

We like using WSC as its cheap to park, has a few interesting shops and all we need for a quick visit – certainly better than the local shops nearer us and better than going al the way into town – just need a makeover

Or are you one of those that tries parking in the pub car park?

Any development that moves Woodley Shopping Centre to being condemned/demolished a step nearer should be welcomed.
