Community groups await news of council grant funding

Charities and organisations applied for more than double the amount of funding available from Wokingham Town Council’s grant scheme.

Every year, the council awards thousands of pounds in grants to a community groups and charities in the town which benefit local people.

On Wednesday, September 31 the council’s finances and general purposes committee decided how £78,500 was to be divided between 43 organisations, which applied for grants totalling £179,202.

Wokingham Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), Wokingham Job Support Centre, Keep Mobile and Wokingham Volunteer Centre all applied for funding. Wokingham Arts Society asked for £900 to fund the preservation of the Diamond Jubilee Frieze, while 1st Emmbrook Scouts wanted £400 to pay for a new tent and Wokingham & District Association for the Elderly (WADE) asked for £10,000 towards refurbishing its toilets.

Last year the council had a funding pot of £75,500, of which £68,932 was awarded to 28 charities and community groups.

Councillor Dave Davies, committee chairman, said: “We have a long history of engaging with these organisations and this year have tried to bring forward the process to allow them to better plan for the next financial year.

“With twice as much being requested than is available for us to allocate it is a difficult decision in how to fairly award grants, but we hope the transparency given this year of our aims and the process will help people understand how we have come to them.

“Most importantly we would like to commend all of the excellent work being done by the many volunteers, organisations and charities within Wokingham town.”

Wokingham Town Council is also changing its grants process and moved the deadline for 2013/14 applications forward by two months so applicants could plan for the next financial year.

Successful applicants will be notified by the end of this month.

How about spending the money on something that we actually care about? Potholes and resurfacing on norreys avenue, traffic police sorting out the antisocial mopeds at 1am, more police on the street stopping the smack heads from robbing.
