Woodley town centre has been awarded Town Team status and will receive £10,000 from the Government.
Reading East MP Rob Wilson was there on Friday to congratulate town centre manager Jacques Lherbier and some business owners.
As a result of a campaign run by the MP, the commercial centre in Woodley will receive money to spend on elements of its original unsuccessful Portas Pilot bid to improve the shopping centre.
The initiative from the Department for Communities and Local Government will also unlock a package of support from town centre specialists from the Association of Town Centre Management.
In addition, Mr Wilson chatted to local business owners about their concerns.
They expressed their worries about start-up costs for local businesses and the level of business rates.
Mr Wilson said: “I am thrilled that the minister has approved my Town Team Partner application for Woodley.
“It was terrific to visit the businesses that will benefit from this exciting development, which will help us increase Woodley’s commercial vibrancy at a crucial time for our economy.
“It was interesting to hear the concerns of these local businesses and I will feed them back to my colleagues in government.”
