"Politics must be kept out of policing" says independent candidate Khan Juna

By Linda Fort
October 10, 2012

Politics should be kept out of policing says the chairman of Thames Valley Police Authority, who hopes to be the elected police boss.

Khan Juna is standing as an independent candidate for the role of Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) on November 15.

He cited the kind of policing in the USA, India and Pakistan as a dire warning of what can happen when politicians get involved with running the police.

He said: “I promise to keep politics out of policing.

“I will focus on those crimes of most concern to the communities and I promise to cut crime and catch criminals and put victims at the heart of policing and criminal justice.”

Mr Juna, of Wickford Way, Lower Earley, has been a member of the Thames Valley Police Authority since 2003 and chairman since 2008.

He has been involved with appointing the most senior police officers and scrutinising their work, setting the police budget and evaluating the force’s performance.

The 59-year-old grandfather has been a member of the Probation Board for six years, served on the national Offending Behaviour Programme Board and was a lay inspector looking into community sentences.

In business, he was ethnic minority chairman and a member of the main board of the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce.

He worked for 24 years in the private sector as production manager in an electronics company and also ran his own travel business.

Mr Juna was born in Pakistan where his father and many members of his family were in the police, and came to England in 1980.

n The Thames Valley is fielding seven prospective candidates so far, according to the Police Crime Commissioner website.

This is a pointless election that solves nothing and in a time of austerity, a total waste of public money

I have every intention of going to vote just so I can spoil my ballot paper.

i like the sentiment - but there is no chance of that at all! The Conservatives are desperate to ensure that this isnt a complete an utter flop with a meaninglessly low turnout ... and to ensure that Anthony "I want to reduce tractor crime" Stansfeild is elected for the Thames Valley. If i can bothered to vote [and i vote in every Political Election] and its unliekly that i will .... then I will vote independant. Sadly, you have lots and lots of experience and would probably be better qualified than most to do the job ... it just means you probably wont get it .... but i wish you luck!

Politics should be kept out of policing but this is a politically imposed role so there is no chance.
