The Conservatives held its Evendons East seat on Wokingham Town Council in yesterday’s by-election.

Mark Ashwell was elected a town councillor after voters from the ward went to the polls at Shute End.

He defeated Liberal Democrat John Bray to the post recording 353 votes to Mr Bray’s 265 votes, in a 26 per cent turnout.

A by-election was called after Tory Cllr Philip Houldsworth, who also serves on Wokingham Borough Council, stood down to concentrate on his borough work and for family reasons.
