Revolving ski centre coming to Woodley

By Jon Nurse
October 04, 2012

Skiers and snowboarders will be able to head for the slopes in Woodley after plans for a revolving ski centre were given the green light.

Skiplex’s indoor ski centre is due to open in Headley Park Ten before Christmas, becoming only the second centre in the UK to boast revolving floor technology.

The centre will fill a 600 sq metre warehouse which has been empty since 2009, joining a go-karting track and indoor paintball on the estate.

It will have two constantly revolving ski slopes controlled remotely by an instructor.

Skiplex chief executive Mark Strachan said: “We think you learn eight times faster on this machine.

“There’s no time wasted on lifts and the instructor is always right beside you. We see people progress from snow ploughs to parallel turns very quickly.

“At the bottom of the slope is a mirror so you can watch your improvements.

“If a beginner is nervous and worried about falling, the instructor can do a reverse snow plough and hold them. It’s good for experts too as the workout constantly pushes their muscles.”

The ski centre has been welcomed by the town’s community workers and leaders for offering an exciting and unique activity.

Councillor Beth Rowland, leader of Woodley Town Council, said: “After this summer of sport it’s nice for something to encourage more people to be active.

“I’m delighted this brings another activity to Woodley and new people to the area to use it.”

Kay Nicker, youth and community worker at Bulmershe Youth Centre, said: “I think youngsters will enjoy it. Anything physical that people can get up and do is good for the town.

“It sounds like a unique idea. Depending on its price, I think it could be quite popular.

“It’s good to have these activities localised. Bracknell ski slope is a bit difficult for our teenagers to get to.

“There are some good things for young people in Woodley – the skate park was a good addition for us.”

Town council leisure services committee chairman Phil Challis said it would be exciting to see something different in Woodley.

Mr Strachan chose the town after studying economics at The University of Reading. He said: “I knew Woodley was a great place to try something new like this. We’re delighted to be coming. Headley Park Ten is a great location.”

He hopes the centre will appeal to families, although there will be a lower age limit owing to a weight restriction.

Skiplex is aiming to open the centre in the last week of November.

Not sure I like this. If you let them build on in Woodley, then they'll want to build one in Twyford, Wokingham, Shinfield, Arborfield. It's a slippery slope.

This looks interesting. I'll have to give it a go. Although, my attempt at skiing with real snow was less than successfull. It can't be worse: can it?
