Works to upgrade the town’s water mains are running ahead of schedule by around one month.
The nine-month project by South East Water is progressing well.
Engineers are laying a new water main in London Road and are due to begin work in town centre roads Wiltshire Road and Rose Street on Monday.
The roads will be closed to traffic while works are carried out in two phases. Access to businesses and car parks will be maintained at all times.
Phase one will include Wiltshire Road and Rose Street and work will take place between the Peach Street and London Road junction, along Wiltshire Road to the junction with Rose Street.
Work in Rose Street will take place at the same time between the Wiltshire Road and Cross Street junction. The first phase of work is due to begin on Monday for four weeks. Phase two will focus on Rose Street with work taking place between the junctions with Cross Street and Broad Street from January 7 to February 11, next year.
The £2 million scheme, which started in July, will see the water company carry out work on 7.1km of mains running throughout the heart of the town to significantly reduce burst water mains.
James Smith, South East Water delivery manager, said: “I am delighted with the progress which has been made by our contractor.
“The gangs have been working extremely hard which has enabled us to move into Wiltshire Road and Rose Street early.
“We anticipate phase one taking four weeks to complete. Therefore, we aim to suspend work in the town centre for the Christmas period in November reducing disruption during this busy period.”
Wiltshire Road and Rose Street will be closed to through traffic during phase one and Rose Street will be closed during phase two.
Mr Smith added: “During the work we will be maintaining access at all times to the public car park in Rose Street and businesses will remain open and accessible as usual.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Wokingham community for their on-going patience and co-operation while construction continues and apologise for any inconvenience this important work may be causing.”
