Car bursts into flames after collision with taxi

September 23, 2012

A driver and his passengers had a lucky escape when a car burst into flames after a collision with a taxi on the A3290 last night.

Police, an ambulance and firefighters were called to the northbound carriageway just before the sliproad to the Sutton Seeds roundabout shortly after 8pm.

The road was sealed off after emergency services arrived to find the car still in the road and the taxi on the hard shoulder.

The car was completely destroyed by the fire and the taxi's bodywork was badly damaged in the crash.

A crew from Wokingham Road fire station extinguished the flames using breathing apparatus and a hose reel before assisting paramedics and clearing debris.

Both vehicles were recovered before a council highways team attended the scene to repair damage to the road where tar had melted because of the intensity of the heat.

No one was seriously hurt although some were taken to hospital as a precaution.

great idea david, lets go back to the days before electricity, think how much fun that woud be. No TV's, compuetrs, mobile phones etc. People would ten have to talk to each other and work for a living.

Wasn't surprised to see a taxi involved in this. A large number of private hire taxis seem to be a law unto themselves, and I'm including Wokingham and South-Ox to the Reading Borough ones.

What is it with Eldon Road, is there a sign on it permitting them to make left turns onto the King's Road?

That's a brilliant photograph from the scene. Should be up for some sort of journalism photography prize or something.

The taxi drivers in Reading always seem to be in some drama or other these days. Was it a black cab?

Why don't they make cars non-flammable? and Flags - why don't they make flags out of non-flammable materials? Especially American flags - so many seem to get burned these days. Can't do the ozone layer any good.

Peace and love comrades, peace and love. Lets have a little bodily fluid exchange love-in. @WhiteSpirit - I love you man. @R I love you too man @Applebys I love you as well

Actually that's all a lie - I don't love any of you ... well, except WhiteSpirit - I love you.

@R why are you calling me a fool? I never said cars were to blame. You see? This is exactly why I don't love you.

Now you mention it though, I may be a fool, come to think of it, but I certainly didn't say cars were to blame. Wasn't life just so simple before cars? When Church yard walls were made of flint from our local chalk-pits and didn't get vibrated by heavy traffic necessitating 40 years worth of scaffolding, when unelected officials didn't give license to twits to be in charge of 2 tons of motorised metal and allow then to hurtle around our streets and tree-lined avenues. When horses clattered on cobbles and roses grew big and bold and happy in manure.

Ooops got to go - I have an apple pie in the oven

Butterfly net please for R Matthews so he can try to catch the (ironic) point David was making as it sails effortlessly over his head.

David -you are clearly a fool if you think cars are to blame. Banning them wont do a thing to help. It's people that are the problem so I suggest banning THEM from cars. That way if any cars are involved in accidents at least there won't be any people harmed.

I've always said cars are dangerous hopefully now they'll get banned from our roads and will never catch-on. Lets keep everything like it was in olden times - all ride horses or walk.

Sorry - I just watched an old film ... got a bit carried away there.
