Kit car and garage destroyed in fire
September 17, 2012
Sparks from an angle grinder led to a fire which destroyed a part-built kit car and a double garage in Woodley this afternoon.
Fire crews from Whitley Wood, Caversham and Wokingham were called to the blaze in Bodmin Road shortly after 2pm.
Two men had been working on the car when sparks from the power tool ignited an open container of petrol and oil in the detached garage.
Flames quickly spread to the car and the roof of the building as the occupants called the fire brigade and removed two gas cannisters.
Firefighters used a jet and two hose reels to extinguish the fire and removed a third cannister and are expected to return this evening to carry out a final safety check.
Watch manager Dave Hawkins, from Caversham Road fire station, said: "The fire was well alight when we got there, the car was burning and the roof of the striucture was giving off most of the smoke and it took quite a bit of stopping.
"If you are using and angle grinder, welding equipment or other tools make sure you look around before you start working with them for any combustable materials or volatile liquids."
