Earley pavilion to be replaced with bigger and better building

An Earley park’s sports pavilion will be demolished next month ahead of a new build later this year.

Members of Earley Town Council’s amenities and leisure committee agreed on a contractor to take down the Sol Joel Park pavilion under its budget cost at a meeting on Wednesday, September 5.

Philip Truppin, town clerk, said: “We are in the process of drawing up the tender for the new building.

“We will hopefully have everything in place to lay the new foundations at about the end of November with the aim of completing the whole project by May next year.”

The new pavilion, off Church Road, would be slightly larger than the current building with changing rooms for men and women and a small refreshment area.

Planning permission was granted for the project earlier this year, with funding coming from council reserves and grants.

“The old pavilion does not meet modern standards and is in a very sorry state of repair,” Mr Truppin explained. “The design for a new pavilion is in keeping with its location in the park with the view of the grade two listed St Peter’s Church behind.”

The council is also in the process of refurbishing the Laurel Park Pavilion and hopes to have it open later this year.
