Firefighters sent to barn blaze

By Jon Nurse
September 09, 2012

Fire crews spent hours tackling a barn fire in Farley Hill last night.

Engines from Bracknell, Windsor, Yately and Whitley Wood were sent to a barn holding 60 tons of hay in Jouldings Lane just before 3pm yesterday.

Watch manager Gary Nash, of Bracknell fire station, said: "There was a severe fire in the barn when we arrived.

"After the temperatures we've had the past few days it all caught alight quite quickly, especially because it was an open ended barn."

Crews calmed the fire with water from a nearby fishing lake.

The engines were later replaced by five other appliances in a rolling operation that went on into the night.

"To deal with hay you have to break it down and drag it out to extinguish the fire so a mechanical digger was used to pull it out," watch manager Nash said.

"The barn was next to a cow shed and the owners moved the animals from the area before we arrived. There was also some machinery nearby that needed to be moved."

Watch manager Nash did not know the cause of the fire.
