Community award for campaigning councillor

August 20, 2012

A councillor who campaigned against polytunnels on farmland in Finchampstead was named a community champion in an awards event at the Houses of Parliament.

Cllr Simon Weeks was recognised for dedication to his community in the British Airways Honours Community Champions event.

Nominated by Finchampstead MP Dr Phillip Lee, Cllr Weeks and 37 other winners were each awarded a pair of tickets to the Olympic Games by British Airways chief executive Keith Williams and Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis on Thursday, July 5.

Mr Williams said: “We are proud to honour the men and women who work tirelessly for their communities. These awards recognise the remarkable people who make a huge difference to other people’s lives locally, often without recognition, but who deserve to be praised.”

Cllr Weeks supported a campaign against plans for the siting of polytunnels over farmland in Finchampstead that were granted by Wokingham Borough Council’s planning committee in April.

I don't see it like that, Bob - seems to me the local people weren't happy about the tunnels; he 'backed the campaign' so that the people there would like him more; he FAILED; and then his colleague nominated him and gave him tickets to the Olympics. Jobs for the boys, Bob, jobs for the boys.

So Mr WIlliams has been rewarded for failing as the tunnels were legal and allowable (and creating much needed employment)? I guess if he was representing the local feeling and it's the thought that counts I can see why he might be nominated.
