Age Concern and council team up for furniture collection service

August 09, 2012

A home collection service for unwanted furniture has been set up by Wokingham Borough Council with Age Concern.

Good quality furniture will be picked up by arrangement and sold to raise funds for the charity at a depot in Winnersh.

The scheme was launched by Wokingham Borough mayor Councillor Bob Wyatt on Monday, July 16.

He said: “The beauty of this scheme is that so many different people will be able to benefit from it.

“I can imagine young people coming to the depot to kit out their first home with affordable furniture as well as older people looking for good quality at a reasonable price and people who may be in more difficult circumstances may be able to benefit from the discounts.”

The furniture will be on sale at the new Furniture and Electrical Depot at Wharfdale Road, IQ Winnersh, which has been provided by landowner Segro.

Tracy Morgan, chief executive of Age Concern Slough and East Berkshire, said: “I am delighted to be working with Wokingham Borough Council on this innovative project which not only provides low cost, good quality furniture for local people but helps the environment by reducing landfill.”

Cllr Wyatt added: “There are obvious benefits for people who need to clear properties and there is also the benefit to the environment that recycling always brings.

“I am delighted with are working with Age Concern Slough and East Berkshire on this and wish the project every success.”

To donate unwanted furniture to the scheme call (0118) 327 1329.

There nothing new in this suggestion its the right person making the suggestion and making it look like he has just thought of it thats what seems to count " what a waste of time "this could have been running at least five years to my knowledge. Yoda

This is a good idea. Whenever I go to the recycling centre it always amazes me to see furniture in the landfill section. .... so anything that stops that and provides a service for Age concern or council tennants has to be an improvement

When someone gets a "council house" there is often no carpets and certainly no furniture. Local charities are often approached to assist with these essentials.

There has been a similar and very successful project run in Newbury and there has been pressure from many to establish a similar scheme in Wokingham so well done it now exists.

It is certainly available to anyone to go and buy.

Importantly people wishing to dispose of good quality surplus items must support it.

Perhaps Reading Borough would do something similar and help prevent wholesale fly-tipping all over town!

Good stuff. WBC's homelessness officer has been suggesting something similar for 5 years but constantly stonewalled. Still, the mayor gets his name in the paper one more time. Which is nice.
