Chance to have a say over school places

August 07, 2012

Parents can share their opinions and take part in a review of the Wokingham borough’s primary and secondary school places this month.

Wokingham Borough Council has organised a number of meetings to give mums and dads the chance to be involved as the demand increases for primary school places.

Meetings take place at Wokingham Youth and Community Centre, in Reading Road, tonight and Tuesday, August 14, from 6pm to 8.30pm and at Loddon Hall, in Loddon Hall Road, Twyford, on Thursday, August 16, from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Further meetings will take place in Winnersh and Shinfield.

The council plans to adopt a Primary Education Strategy in November, which will set out how it will secure additional primary school places in the borough and meet rising pupil numbers.

Councillor Charlotte Haitham Taylor, executive member for children’s services, said: “We need to make sure the decisions we make about school places are the right ones in the long run.

“These sessions will help us to get feedback on what parents need and will explore solutions or options about school places.

“There is a high level of demand for school places in Wokingham borough and nationally, and we want to ensure we involve parents in decisions about school place planning.

“The review will consider school capacity and the admission arrangements as a whole, ahead of our annual consultation which all admission authorities have to undertake.”

To book a place at a meeting call Anju Sharma on (0118) 974 6158 or email admissions.review@wokingham.gov.uk.

Mr Geek. Invitation letters were sent out to all parents with children who start reception next year. There is no point sending letters to parents with children who are already in school because they already have a school place already allocated! It seems WBC is not as incompetent as you suggest.

If they are incompetent how come the schools are so higly rated in the country? Devious? I think a bit too far from the people they serve sometimes / out of touch more than devious. There is a "tweaking" required but don't throw the baby out with the bath water :-) Out of interest, when would you hold the meetings Mr Geek?

If they really wanted to hear what the parents thought, perhaps they wouldn't arrange the meeting smack-bang in the middle of the summer holidays, when many parents with children are likely to be away. And perhaps they might have sent a letter out via the schools so all school-age children's parents were aware of the meeting? Incompetent or devious? It's a tough choice with Wokingham Council...
