New indoor market opens on Saturday

August 07, 2012

Traders in Wokingham are signing up to hold stalls at the town’s first indoor market.

Wokingham Town Council wants to attract a range of businesses to the venture, which aims to bring more shoppers into Wokingham.

The market will open on Saturday, August 11, for a three-month trial at the former Peacocks store on Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9am to 4pm, with charity stalls and table-top sales on Wednesdays.

Around 20 business have registered an interest and Gardeneer Services Ltd has secured a pitch for the duration of the market.

The gardening services’ managing director Tony Hewetson said: “We have a lot of expertise in the gardening area because my head gardener used to advise at Chelsea Flower Show.

“One of the things we like to do is help gardeners in the locality and provide information, effectively we hope to create a planning clinic so people can ask questions.”

He continued: “Many places have overheads involved and having a shop wouldn’t make it viable, but an indoor market gives us that opportunity.”

Nicola Gunn, from Reading, runs cupcake and cake business Baking Belle.

She said: “We will be selling a variety of cupcakes – chocolate, vanilla, caramel and raspberry ripple to name a few. We will also be selling homemade chocolate brownies and flapjacks.

“Wokingham was the first place I contacted about having a stall as I thought it was the perfect place.

“I was really excited at the prospect of the indoor market as the wind or rain wouldn’t be a problem and I could showcase all the exciting different flavours without the weather getting in the way.”

Anyone interested in having a stall at the indoor market should call Rob Vincent on (0118) 974 0881 or 07847 602186 or email bgo@wokingham-tc.gov.uk.
