Wokingham's Anna Watkins wins gold at London Olympics

By Laura Herbert
August 03, 2012

Wokingham rower Anna Watkins struck gold for Team GB at the Olympics this afternoon in the women's double skull.

She and partner Katie Grainger were cheered on to victory by a home crowd lining the banks for the river at Eton Dorney.

They finished ahead of Australia who took silver and Poland in third.

On Monday, Grainger and Watkins (nee Bebington) - who won bronze in the same competition with rower Elise Laverick at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 – set a new Olympic record in their qualifying heat.

They won with a time of 6:44:33 - five seconds quicker then the previous record set by Germany at Barcelona in 1992.
