Robber jailed after pregnant mum was threatened with hammer

By Linda Fort
August 01, 2012

A 23-year-old man has been jailed for five years and eight months for his part in a robbery in which a heavily pregnant women was threatened with a hammer.

Sunna Lock, whose last address was a bail hostel in Southcote Road, West Reading, denied being a part of the robbery in Shinfield on September 25 last year.

But he was found guilty at Reading Crown Court and sentenced on Monday.

The recorder Harold Persaud said Lock would serve half the sentence and had already been in custody for 222 days.

Mr Recorder Persaud acknowledged Lock was not the one holding the hammer.

He added: “This was a joint offence and there are no grounds to diminish the part you played.”

Lock’s two co-defendants Carl Pontin, 24, of Heroes Walk and Thomas Birks, 22, of Lybndhurst Road, Tilehurst, were sentenced to four years and four years and three months imprisonment respectively at a previous hearing.

He said Lock had numerous previous convictions for dishonesty, burglary and theft and most recently for robbery.

Mr Recorder Persaud added Lock had also committed a further crime while in prison.

Defending Lock, Graham Smith said he had an “unattractive record for his age” but had spent some time out of trouble after converting to Islam.

He said his religion gave him strength.

He pointed out Lock was standing furthest away from the victim of the crime Sevena Semkova.

Mrs Semkova went to Shinfield with her husband Cristo Chenchev from their home in London – lured there by the robbers claiming they had a motorbike to sell.

The gang led Mr Chenchev to a field but after realising he had no money they returned to his van and one of them held a claw hammer to Mrs Semkova’s head and grabbed her bag which contained £5,000.

She was heavily pregnant and she was theatened in front of her three-year-old son.

Converting to Islam didn't help this guys criminal record calm down, he committed this crime almost a year ago and has been on remand for 222 days? So thats about 2 weeks on the street without committing a crime, well done you disgrace for a human being.....

'unattractive record for his age' some understatement surely, but apparently he's now converted to Islam,so that's alright then!

Maybe the members of the MC were explaining it wrong? Too much tickle-monster and not enough bike chains perhaps?

@Hobogeddon, if you pause to consider quite how many motorcycles clubs there are in Reading and what their reputations are you may realise that when I use the terms explain I am using it in a rather broad sense.

Rh3, so you would send this 'gentleman' to what is essentially a drug fuelled holiday camp as punishment ?

I don't think a pregnant lady who has been threatened with a hammer would agree this to be a fair and just punishment.

Or maybe you would prefer he is treated to a variety of canoeing, horse riding, dj schools like the failed systems in place in our youth justice system?

You are either using extreme irony or you're not very bright - I'm not sure which. Essentially you are suggesting that the way to eradicate extreme violence from our society is to inflict even worse violence on those who have committed a violent crime. Do you not see the paradox in this or have you just not thought it through properly?

@whitespirit I'm not suggesting any sort of discussion with this person is worthwhile, unless it's in a language he understands. Unfortunately the only language this sort of underclass understands is pain and violence. Crime is now seen by people like this as a fast track to a no rent, no bills, free tv, free playstation HOTEL.

@Hobogeddon, that won't work. I know of a group of scrotes who regularly used to steal motorcycles, in particular for some reason those belonging to either members of a club or those closely associated with that club. The club used to regluarly explain to the scrotes the error of their ways but they kept on doing it. Only maturity and/or eventual death stopped both the stealing and the associated explanations.

IBFudger the "don't rob people" lesson should have been learned from his parents and at school, his local scout troup and Sunday School - clearly he failed to learn this and so for the rest of us ... "don't go with strangers who can't remember where they left the bike in the middle of the night" is the next best thing.

Perhaps "Harold" could come on here and explain himself?

@ David Williams. I don't read it like that at all. I see it explained as a 5 year sentence, reduced to 2.5 years, with an extra 222 days removed due to time served. So just under 2 years starting from last Monday.

I also believe that the lesson should have been "don't rob people". Unfortunately, and as has been proved countless times before, this scum will not learn. Hobogeddon's idea of beating this lesson into him is a fine one!

I notice young Master Lock sleeps on his right side and is very particular about his hair cut and face hair (budding Sherlock here). ((Oh bluddy heck GR why is "Fac ial" a banned word?))

I don't agree with IBFudger and Harold (probably a made-up name) merely pointed out that as young Master Lock has already served 222 days of his sentence - he would be out in 2.5 years.

Also, I am sure that the Islamist cult in Reading will hold him at arms length as surely they wouldn't want 'his sort' at their little weekly meetings - now, if he converts to Church of England however, I am sure they would welcome him with open arms (they love a challenge).

A lesson to us all though - if invited into a muddy field at night by a gang of hammer wielding ne'er-do-wells to buy a motorbike and they can't remember where they left it - "Just Say No".
