Finchampstead Society opens village archive

July 31, 2012

The secrets and history of life in one of the borough’s villages was revealed when the Finchampstead Society opened its archive earlier this month.

Members of the society have spent more than 30 years collecting images and information about the village, which they put on display at The Finchampstead Baptist Centre (FBC).

Among visitors at an inaugural open afternoon on Thursday, July 5, was Margaret Mearing, 90 this year, who admired a photo she was in, taken when she was a young girl.

Back in 1975 the founder members of the society formed a history and heritage group that began collecting historical and interesting information about the village, and residents have added many memories to the archive over the years.

The collection now has a permanent home at the FBC in Gorse Ride, which will be open to the public on the first Thursday of each month between 2pm and 4pm.
