Water main bursts in London Road

By Jon Nurse
July 26, 2012

A water main burst in London Road yesterday morning, affecting the supply to nearly a dozen homes later in the day.

The pipe burst before 8.30am at the junction with Binfield Road, close to upgrade works opposite St Crispin's School.

Technicians were called and the damaged connection was replaced.

The water main was turned off for about an hour at 6.15pm, leading to low or no water pressure at 11 properties at the time.

Work to reinstate the road was completed this morning.

A Wokingham Borough Council spokesman said: "A pipe burst in close proximity to the major works being carried out by South East water in London Road.

"We were warned at 7.30am that this may cause delays to peak time traffic."

A South East Water spokesman said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience the burst water main caused and thank those people who were affected by it for their patience and cooperation."

Temporary traffic lights and a one-way system began use in London Road on Monday while work is carried out for 16 weeks.

There was a burst water main in Binfield Road yesterday. Today it's London Road, and both appeared to be serious. This can't be in isolation to the work that is going on throughout the town and it isn't really acceptable to keep exploding water mains around town, depriving businesses and residents of their water supply without notice, and digging up even more roads as an emergency. I recognise that the work in the town is urgent to reduce leaks, and we've known about it for long enough, but much more care really needs to be taken in the work. The bursts cannot be unconnected to the work, but I don't expect the water company is answerable to anyone here. Ofwat certainly won't support individual complaints.
