Wokingham road works start on Monday

July 20, 2012

Motorist are preparing for heavy tailbacks around town as South East Water begins a nine-month project to update Wokingham’s water mains from Monday.

The £2 million scheme will see the water company carry out work on 7.1km of mains running throughout the heart of the town, including London Road, Rose Street, Broad Street and Station Road, to significantly reduce burst water mains.

£2 million water mains project to start next month

From Monday, Station Road will be closed for six weeks, while temporary traffic lights and a one-way system will be used in London Road while work is carried out for 16 weeks.

South East Water held a drop-in session earlier this month to give people and businesses the opportunity to find out more about the project.

James Smith, South East Water delivery manager, said: “We hope that by informing as many people as possible about the work we can minimise disruption and I would like to thank all those who attended our drop-in session for their constructive comments.

“The majority of people understood why this important work is required and that we are working hard to limit the impact on daily life during the construction.”

Businesses will need your support during water mains upgrade

Station Road will be closed between the Molly Millar pub and the junction of Shute End.

The diversion will take traffic along Barkham Road to Bearwood Road where the route then continues as far as Sainsbury’s supermarket in Winnersh before taking Reading Road back into Wokingham.

Wokingham railway station will remain open and access will be from the western end of Station Road via the mini roundabout. Vehicle access to Wellington Road will also be maintained.

Mr Smith said: “I would like to apologise for any disruption this work will cause, but hope residents, motorists and the local community understand the long term benefits this scheme will deliver.”

I always presumed that Wokingham would have been covered by Thames Water like Reading is...

Because why should Londoners be the only ones to enjoy transport chaos this summer.

For those who do not already know.... Instead of taking the 3 mile trip, via Bearwood and Winnersh, to get back into WKM use Oxford Road or Woosehill Lane / Meadow Road / Murray Road or Arthur Road/ Caroline Drive and then join Oxford Road. Good luck
