Downpours produce great pick-your-own strawberries

The relentless rain hasn’t spoiled everyone’s summer.
One of the wettest Junes on record has ripened a bountiful crop of strawberries at Gray’s Farm and owner Peter Gray is inviting fruit fans to not miss the pick of the season.
Fruit picking at the farm in Heathlands Road started at the end of May and, after a slow start, is now in the peak of season.
Mr Gray said: “The strawberries are coming on and looking very good. A lot of people were writing the strawberries off when they weren’t doing well in May but now we have an exceptional crop.
“Last year was an early start to the season but it’s been very different this time. It has been unusually late and slow in building up and the wet weather has been deterring customers.
“That doesn’t need to be the case though and the fruit is now itching to be picked.”
The farm, which is run by three generations of the Gray family, is open from 9am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday. Visit www.graysfarm.co.uk for more details.
