A promising young athlete will be competing in the World Junior Championships in Barcelona at the time the Olympic Flame visits her hometown.

But Sophie Papps, 17, from Birch Hill, has been selected to carry the torch through the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham on Thursday, July 26, hours before the opening ceremony.

The Edgbarrow School sixth former said: “I was really excited when I found out, but quite nervous to be part of such a massive part of history.”

Sophie was nominated by the British Olympic Association in recognition of her achievements as a 100m runner, winning gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Turkey last year.

The 17-year-old said: “My whole family and my training group will be coming to support me on July 26.

“Competing in the Olympics is a future aim, so to be part of this year’s Olympics in my home country is amazing.”

Sophie will be competing in the 100m and relay in Barcelona.

She will buy her torch and hopes it will inspire children to take up sport when she takes it into local primary schools.
