Party to raise awareness of dementia

June 26, 2012

An elderly care charity hosted some special events to mark a national dementia awareness week last month.

Age Concern Woodley in Southlake Crescent held a carers’ lunch and enjoyed a garden party during the week of Sunday, May 20, to Saturday, May 26.

Community care development manager Ann Parr said: “We have some people at our centre with dementia so we wanted to raise awareness to people in the community.”

The centre offered a three-course meal at a carers’ lunch on Tuesday, May 22, accompanied by singing of Frank Sinatra classics.

Mrs Parr said: “Everyone really enjoyed the lunch and I hope it can become a regular event. There were about 40 people there and the atmosphere was buzzing.”

On the Friday the centre hosted a jubilee garden party. “It was really nice as it was a lovely day and we had an organ brought outside with speakers to provide some music,” Mrs Parr said.

Dementia Awareness Week, organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, aimed to raise awareness and increase the understanding of dementia.
