Drunk man rescued from River Kennet

June 12, 2012

Fire fighters rescued a drunk man from the River Kennet in the early hours of this morning.

Crews from Wokingham Road, Whitley Wood, Dee Road and Caversham Road stations were called to a section of the river close to King's Road at 2.10 am.

The man was swiftly pulled from the water before being taken to hospital by paramedics.

Crew manager Charlie Bell, from Wokingham Road station, said: "We had a gentleman in the river, don't know how he got there. He was intoxicated and also stating he had a friend believed to be in the water as well.

"We rescued him from the river and continued our search with the help of the police only to find out later his friend was nicely tucked up at his home in bed."

bit stupid to get so drunk you can fall into a river.

Sorry - they were drunk and therefore put themselves at risk to start with!

Who says it is stupid to get drunk? I don't think it is and I don't drink any alcahol.

It may be deemed unwise to do certain things when you've been drinking. But they weren't breaking the law. And my understanding is that alcahol effects your rational decisions. Hence, why the chap may have ended up in the river.

Do you think the fire service should've just left him in the river? And should they have ignored the man when he claimed his friend may also be in trouble?

Choccielab - bit stupid to get so drunk you can fall into a river - appreciate paths are very narrow along some of the Kennet as I have said.

Sorry - they were drunk and therefore put themselves at risk to start with!

I used to walk along part of the Kennet as I have also said, but even if had a couple of drinks, would not walk along by the river, but along the Kings Road, hence not risking falling into river!

Should be charged for the time it's taken the fire brigade to search for someone already "tucked up in bed".

It's clear the man didn't know his friend was at home. He was rightfully concerned about his welfare.

I'm sure it's better all round that the fire fighters wasted a bit of time looking for his friend, rather than potentially having to retrieve a body the next day.

Also, there are parts of the footpath along the Kennet which are very narrow - I used to walk along (sober!) the bit from Duke Street when I worked at the Pru - always made sure I was well away from the river's edge!

Since the Environment Agency nicked all the water the Kennet has been a nicer and cleaner alternative to the Central swimming pool.
