The Roebuck pub returns to Wokingham

As Wokingham celebrated the Queen’s 60 years on the throne, one of the town’s pubs stepped back in time as it reverted to its original name.
The Square Bar in Market Place unveiled new signage for the town centre’s big jubilee party on Sunday, changing the pub’s name back to The Roebuck.
Officially renaming the pub, Wokingham Town mayor Councillor Peter Lucey said: “I am so proud we are returning this 200-year-old pub to its original name. I wish Mark and the staff all the best in the future.”
Landord Mark Miles added: “Bar Square was named in 2004/05 by the previous owner and it never suited the premise, it is a pub.
“There is historical significance as it was called The Roebuck back in 1750 and we thought it was appropriate with the Diamond Jubilee to return it to its original name.”
Mr Miles is appealing to punters who have old photos of The Roebuck to come forward as he would like to display copies of them in the pub.

Can the council not enact a local byelaw to preserve traditional names etc. It is not just the LORD Raglan but also the Rose that we are in danger of losing. While the Rose has wandered round the town centre over the years its history goes back a number of centuries.
Well done the Roebuck.
