Going potty for Sonning Scarecrow Trail
June 07, 2012
Rainy weather failed to prevent more than 500 people from celebrating the Diamond Jubilee at a traditional street party in Sonning.
Families turned out in their droves despite the downpours to enjoy plenty of food, music and entertainment in Pearson Road on Sunday.
Music from Pangbourne Band and the Nostalgia Steel Band filled the air while a magician conjured up fun and excitement for children who also had the chance to try out circus skills.
Home Secretary Theresa May MP, the Mayor of Ligugé Bernard Mauze and around a dozen guests from Sonning’s twin village of Liguge in France were among those enjoying the celebrations.
On Sunday there was also a special jubilee service at St Andrew’s Church and the next morning the bells pealed for three hours in honour of the historic occasion.
Celebrations began on Saturday at the biennial Sonning Festival featuring a regatta on the Thames with dongola, rowing and canoeing races as well as a prize for the best dressed crew.
This was won by a group from junior section wearing masks of the Queen and David Cameron.
There was also a barbecue run by Sonning Scouts along with stalls selling books, clothing, cakes and refreshments.
That evening there was a fish and chip supper and live music from funk, soul and rock band Slim Pickings at The Sonning Club in Pearson Road.
On Monday and Tuesday the annual Sonning Scarecrow Trail returned to the village with many entries taking a Royal theme.
The hall in Pearson Road also hosted an art exhibition and throughout the weekend there was a flower festival at St Andrew’s with arrangements by Sonning Flower Club.
Councillor Mark Green, chairman of Sonning Parish Council, which organised the street party, said: “Considering the wet weather everyone just got on with it in true British spirit.”
The village will continue its celebrations at a black tie Elegant Village Picnic with live music in the grounds of Bishop’s Close in Pearson Road on Saturday, July 14.
