St James’ Church window is back to its best
May 22, 2012
More than £2,000 has been raised to restore a window in the bell tower of a Finchampstead church.
The glass panel in the window at St James’ Church had been left badly broken for some years, but has now been restored thanks to the fundraising efforts of the church’s bell ringers.
The ringers raised £2,340 to restore the window and a special re-dedication service took place at the church in Church Lane on Sunday, May 6.
A spokeswoman for the church said: “Those who navigated the narrow spiral staircase to view the window considered it well worthwhile to see the panel fully restored in all its vibrant colour and detail.”
The window, which depicts a medieval king bearing an orb and sceptre, contains the oldest glass in the church, although it is not the oldest window.
