Making strides towards Woodley War Memorial
May 21, 2012
Fundraisers have almost reached the halfway point to fund a war memorial and are inviting supporters to join in with an afternoon walk.
The Woodley War Memorial Project is holding a three-mile walk at 1pm on Sunday, May 27.
Project founder Colin Lott said: “We’re nearly halfway, having now raised more than £10,000. It will be at least a year before the memorial can be built, but we are pleased with progress.”
Organisers have distributed 8,000 flyers around Woodley inviting residents to join them on a walk starting at Woodford Park Leisure Centre in Haddon Drive.
Mr Lott said: “We’re hoping for good weather as that could make a big difference.”
Soldiers from the 7th Rifles Battalion will lead the walk, followed by Woodley Scouts carrying a 5ft wooden model of the proposed monument.
At the finish there will be free squash for children and the Scouts will be running a barbecue.
The walk, which is sponsored by Romans estate agents, is £2 for adults or 50p for children.
Plans for the £25,000 memorial are progressing as Woodley Town Council commissioned a landscape architect earlier this year to provide designs for a civic area at Woodley Memorial Ground in Headley Road, which would feature the monument.
