Lamb dies in dog attack

By Jon Nurse
May 10, 2012

A lamb has died after a dog attack on farmland in Knowl Hill.

A dog attacked four lambs at Lots Farm in Lutmans Haven on Saturday.

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses and warning owners that dogs should be kept on their leads when passing through areas with livestock.

Of the four lambs, one was killed and the other three were bitten and are likely to have to be put down.

Four public footpaths run across the land where the lambs were attacked.

Anyone with information should contact PC Hedley Gabriel on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I can't believe people are so irresponsible as to let their dogs off the lead around lambs. It's only natural for the dog to try to eat lambs - it's instict, lambs are prey. Anyone with half a brain cell should know this.

I'm a dog owner and I am appalled when I see fellow dog owners ignorning signs to keep their dogs on a lead or not realising the obvious: you cannot let *any* dog run loose near livestock. Even if your little muffin "would never hurt a fly", it could still cause the livestock distress. Grow up and be responsible. If you choose to own a dog, you take on the responsibilities that come with it.

Start shooting the dogs, people will soon get the idea.

When will dog owners respect that these young farm animals must be protected. Dog owners please keep your animals on the lead when in fields or areas where lambs are. Only yesterday I witnessed a couple allowing their dog to run wild next to a field of young lambs. Obviously dog owners with very little sense.
