Ford tragedy man named

May 01, 2012

A  man who died after the car he was travelling in became stuck in a ford has been named as Jonathan Gammon from Middlesex.

The 52-year-old from Kingston Lane, Teddington, was a passenger in the silver Toyota Yaris which was being driven by his wife when it entered the ford at Thornford Road, Headley, on the county border on Monday morning.

The car was swept 100m downstream and became submerged by flood water.

Nr Gammon's wife, 55, was able to get out of the car but after being rescued by firefighters her husband was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sergeant Paul Plews, from the Farnborough Roads Policing Unit, said: "Our thoughts are with his wife and family who are understandably very distressed by what’s happened.

"Our investigation is focused on establishing the events leading up to Mr Gammon’s death and we will be preparing a file for the coroner."

@ChumleyWarner The sign was completely submerged after the highest rainfall in April for over 100 years!

Well it must be ok to drive into the river then!

Again i do feel sad that the family has lost a loved one and yes i imagine his wife will feel terrible.

So what would YOU do to try and minimise the risk of this happening again at this location and also at the ford at the lands end pub Woodley?

@Common Cents I am truly sorry for all concerned but for goodness sake when are people going to learn?

This happens many times every year and it is all avoidable. The water was over the 5 foot marker so what did they think was going to happen?

Why do you think a colour code is an Idiot idea? Green is a universal safe colour and red is a danger colour - seems like a very sensible idea to me.

Apparently the depth sign was entirely submerged.

I dont think the sort of comments you made helps anyone.

@Rincewind; his wife was driving. And I don't think we need 'idiot' posts today. Hopefully you all got that out of your system yesterday.

Can you even begin to imagine how she is feeling? A horrible, but sadly avoidable tragedy, my condolences to all concerned.

I feel sorry for his family but what the hell did he think would happen when he drive into a fast flowing ford 5 foot deep?!

Maybe a colour code on the depth markers could help make it easier for people?
