Woodley to turn red, white and blue for jubilee

By Jon Nurse
May 01, 2012

Woodley is set to become a sea of red, white and blue for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Patriotic flower arrangements and 240m of bunting will decorate the town centre in June to mark the occasion.

Jacques Lherbier, Woodley Town Centre Management Initiative (TCMI) leader, said: “The town centre is going to be very Union Jack-themed this summer. I think the flowers will feel very welcoming.”

Woodley TCMI has coordinated and paid for 67 hanging baskets which will contain red, white and blue trailing surfinias.

The baskets will displayed from Waitrose car park to Woodley Library car park, with new baskets attached on Iceland building walls.

Three new posts will also be installed in Library Parade to support six baskets, thanks to sponsorship from Lidl.

Organisers are expecting the baskets’ theme to change in late May, giving time for them to thicken and grow for the Jubilee on Tuesday, June 5.

The town centre’s hanging baskets were awarded a commendation from the Berkshire Gardens Trust last August.

The town centre will host a Diamond Jubilee children’s party on Sunday, June 3. Mr Lherbier said: “I’d like to invite all the families to bring a picnic into the town centre for the day.”

Wouldn't the royal colours of purple, scarlet and gold have been much more appropriate?
