Don't waste your vote on Thursday

By Laura Herbert
May 01, 2012

Voters can have their say in the elections next Thursday, May 3, and details of local polling stations will be on poll cards sent to homes in the borough.

Polling stations will be open from 7am- 10pm. Voters are asked to bring their polling card with them but can still vote without it.

To vote, follow the instructions on the ballot paper carefully. If you are unsure, a member of staff will be able to help you.

Anyone who applied for a postal vote must make sure it is returned by 10pm on May 3. If it is too late to post back, you can drop it off at your polling station or Wokingham Borough Council offices in Shute End.

For more details call (0118) 974 6522 or (0118) 974 6523. Alternatively, visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk

Door stepping and leafleting is, time consuming and expensive for ordinary local people who share your concerns but are willing to argue your case in the council. We forget that is what the job is supposed to be. A part time activity. We have grown accustomed to people with the backing of business coming door to door selling themselves as your equal and then ignoring us. That is why I agreed to stand in Wescott.

But if you will not look for the names of your candidates on the internet, read their views and make demands on them before you vote, and instead wait for attention from those who suck spare time and money that they likely do not share your concerned. Then the cycle will continue.

Luckily voting 'no' on residential building on anything other than an old office block is not as much work as trying to get people who don't want it on board.

I'm standing in Wescott by the way. Kazek Lokuciewski. I have a blog, just google it.

I like the 'anyone but the current lot' option or the answer PoneRana is looking for ... (I'm sure Libdems are it)

No one deserves my vote, not one single leaflet or canvasser, lazy!

It seems the most marginal bits of Wokingham are Winnersh, bits of Woodley and Lower Earley. Everywhere is so blue, no-one fights for them.

A spoiled ballot paper is better than no vote at all.

   Hi,

Voting in the elections in Wokingham isn't a waste of time, at a local level lots of the activities don't really involve political type actions in the traditional sense, they involve local decision making which affects us all, if we have firm views on things we should vote for whoever floats our boat.

Local government is a tremendously challenging area for anybody to be involved in, there are no right answers, Note the comments on this post and other posts.

What I think is really bad is that a local councillor (or MP) can get elected when maybe only 30% of the voters going out - the other 70% of the electorate also have opinions. I shall be voting - probably with the rain going down my neck and would encourage others to do so.

Voting in Wokingham is a waste of time - no wonder people get fed up and disillusioned. Until this democratic deficit is sorted out and we get a decent council with a decent opposition we will continue to suffer. Having, in effect - sorry Prue, - a one party council is at the root of all WBC's problems.

For anyone who does want to vote for 'None of the above' then please, turn up and vote by spoiling the paper. Spoiled papers are still counted in the UK election, count towards official stats and carry more weight than a registered voter that chooses not to vote. A protest vote shows you are willing to turn up!

Party members _should_ see this article and be proactive in earning a vote. All members will have information available through party websites.

I take it back. The Libdems have got into the action and it seems their local candidate shares my views on preserving Wokingham's green space

Agreed with Fed up. In fact I am going to create my own option of 'none of the above' on my ballot form.

I think at the next election I shall run for the 'none of the above' party! At least if will give people the option to say 'you are all rubbish!'

How are we supposed to know what the policies of the various parties are? Only the Tories seem to have distributed any leaflets.

I want to vote for a candidate who will be working to preserve Elms Field and the fields surrounding Wokingham. How do I know if there is one?

I'd like that option, FedUp. that, or 'anyone but the current lot'.

I too have seen little sign of an election - I see news coverage of parties fighting for councils up and down Britain, but (living yards from WBC) have had no leaflets from any party, no-one knocking on my door, seen no canvassers... I only know there's a vote because my postal vote turned up last week. Is this because everyone knows 'the oldies will vote Tory, so the council is safe; let's not waste our time and money canvassing'?

Is there an election? Seriously I hadn't noticed as I've only had 1 leaflet from 1 party so far and that contained election pledges for stuff that has already been announced. I was accosted by another person from a party who's only reply to points raised was "I'll put that on the ideas board".

Please can I have an option on the ballot paper that says "None of the above"?
