Guide for parents of new drivers

April 30, 2012

Parents can pick up free copies of a new guide to help them cope with their child’s first year of driving.

Wokingham Borough Council is distributing copies of ‘Good Egg Guide for Parents of New Drivers’ in response to young driver initiatives.

Nearly eight out of 10 parents fear their son or daughter will be involved in a car crash, according to a survey carried out by Good Egg Safety.

The survey also shows that one in three mums and dads think their children drive too fast, while 10 per cent of parents worry that their children will be tempted to send or check text messages behind the wheel.

One in 10 parents are also concerned their child will drink or take drugs when driving.

An average of one in five drivers are involved in a crash in their first six months of driving, so free copies of the Good Egg Guide are being made available to parents throughout the UK.

The council also hold a pre-driver Drive Start training programme. Details can be found at: www.wokingham.gov.uk/drive-start

We need to follow the USA and restrict the driving of new drivers. In California young drivers under 21 are not allowed to drive after dusk except to and from their place of employment or education. Similar rules over here that should also cover the first year after passing the test what ever the persons age would reduce the number of accidents significantly.
