Driver avoids serious injury after van overturns near notorious ford
By Lewis RuddFebruary 03, 2012
A driver avoided serious injury this morning when his van skidded on ice as it approached the Charvil ford and overturned.
Police and paramedics were called out to the notorious ford in Whistley Green at 11.42am after receiving reports a red Peugeot Bipper was on its roof.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said it is understood the driver was attempting to pass through the ford and on to Park Lane, but had skidded on ice formed from water which had splashed on to the tarmac when other vehicles have driven through the tributary of the River Loddon, and flipped over.
He added the driver of the van had escaped from the vehicle unhurt, but said the incident had left him "shaken".
Police have asked Wokingham Borough Council to temporarily close the road to passing traffic to avoid any further accidents while temperatures continue to plummet.
The vehicle is awaiting recovery.

Also, it could easily catch someone out on approach, as the roads at the moment are very cold and dry, with no sign of ice. Then you just come across a massive black sheet of ice across the full width of the road as you come round the corner.
