Cash stolen from 91-year-old in "despicable crime"

By Caroline Cook
January 27, 2012

A 91-year-old woman had £70 in cash stolen while she was shopping in a Lower Earley supermarket.

The elderly woman was shopping at Asda in Chalfont Way at 10.30am on Thursday, December 15, when the incident occurred.

Three woman gathered around the woman while she shopped and as she took something off a display one of the women allegedly removed her purse from her shopping trolley.

All three offenders then walked out of the store leaving their shopping baskets behind in another aisle.

All three women are white and one was wearing a dark jacket and light grey hat.

Another had shoulder length dark hair and was wearing a large dark jacket and dark trousers.

The third was wearing a blue, black and white striped jacket and was carrying a large black handbag.

PC Chris Susel, of Loddon Valley police station, said: “We are keen to speak to the women in the CCTV image as they were seen nearby and we believe they can help with our enquiries.

“I am appealing for anyone who saw the women or if they can identify them, to contact police.

"This is a despicable offence committed against a vulnerable person.”

Anyone who recognises the women from the CCTV or who has information about the incident should contact PC Susel on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Sounds like they've done it before, probably not locally as they must be aware of CCTV. Maybe they drive around stopping off at supermarkets well away from their local area. CCTV recordings of the car park might reveal something.

What a sad bunch, I hope they get caught and are made to apologise to the victim for this crime.

In fairness to GR, they're enough of an image for those who recognise them to report them for investigation, particularly together; I suspect (excuse pun) the higher quality images would be for legal/court proceedings.

@Millicent The pictures have been supplied by the police and are the best quality we have at the moment.

Asda told me that they can read the fine print on a newspaper with there cameras..

We need better pics if there is to be a high chance of catching them..
