Firefighters spend more than two hours tackling chimney fire at Twyford home

Firefighters spent more than two hours tackling a chimney fire at a house in Twyford last night.
A crew from Wokingham fire station was called out to an address in Ruscombe Lane just before 6.30pm after receiving reports an open fire had got out of control.
The incident has prompted fire bosses to once again remind people burning anything other than smokeless coal at their home to have the chimney swept and cleaned at least once a year, as the build up of tar and soot is a potential fire hazard.
Watch Manager Steve Beard explained how the structure of the chimney made it "difficult" for firefighters to deal with the blaze, as a number of "twists and turns" meant the crew was unable to deal with the incident from within the house.
Instead, firefighters armed with hose reels had to climb on to the roof of the house and extinguish the fire from the top of the chimney.
Watch Manager Beard said there was no serious damaged caused to the property and that no-one was hurt during the incident.
He said: "If an individual is burning something other than smokeless fuel the tar starts to build up and if it does not get cleaned on a regular basis the debris can catch fire.
"If someone is going to burn fuel other than smokeless fuel then ensure the chimney is kept in a good condition and swept on a regular basis, or once a year at a minimum."

They seem to be notoriously hard to get hold of.
