Two burst water mains which caused traffic chaos in the town on Friday have been repaired.

Barkham Road has reopened following a three-day closure and engineers working on another main in Shute End in the town centre completed the work on Friday evening.

The two burst mains and planned gas works in Nashgrove Lane brought traffic in parts of the borough to a standstill during Friday morning’s rush hour.

Engineers from Thames Water were called to a nine-inch ruptured water main in Barkham Road on Thursday morning.

They were forced to close the road that evening to repair the problem but it was not reopened until yesterday evening.

Engineers from South East Water were called to a burst six-inch main in Shute End on Thursday evening and had completed the work just before the rush hour on Friday afternoon.

The road had been controlled by manually operated traffic measures while the repair work was being carried out.

The problems came just weeks before Finchampstead Road, is to be closed for six weeks while contractors undertake a major project to replace old water pipes which are prone to leaking.
