Plan to convert town centre offices to flats

June 25, 2010

Office space above town centre shops could be transformed into seven one and two-bedroom flats if plans are given the green light.

The proposal for office space above Santander and WH Smith in Market Place have been lodged with Wokingham Borough Council.

The office suites have been empty for three years and there are seven parking spaces located behind the building that could be used by residents. A public consultation on the plan runs until July 7.

There are a large number of shops in the town centre which have space over them which is not used or grossly under used. The council should be positively encouraging their conversion to modern living accomodation as an alternative to some of the proposed building on green space.
