Proposed changes to boat moorings

March 10, 2010

Have your say on the future use of leisure boat moorings during a consultation.

Reading Borough Council is proposing to retain the leisure mooring by Tesco in Napier Road with the possibility of extending it by 100 metres if the demand for use increases.

The plans also propose to relocate the Christchurch Meadows mooring to the eastern part of Christchurch Meadows so boaters will be further away from residents’ homes. Moorings at the site will also be restricted at the end of Wolsey Road for drop-off and collections only.

There are no proposals within the current consultation to change the existing provision of the council’s other mooring at Chestnut Walk. The moorings are provided by the council for boats visiting Reading – current conditions allow 24-hour mooring only.

Tony Page, lead councillor for planning and transport, said: “Over recent years, during busy periods, some of the moorings haven’t been able to cope with demand due to people mooring their boats longer than allowed.

“The council, as part of the consultation, is proposing to limit stays in any 14-day period across all council moorings.

“This will be monitored through regular visits, targeted at areas where we find ongoing or irregular abuse of moorings.”

Residents, people using the moorings, neighbouring residential properties to Tesco, Kennet and Avon Canal Trust and Thames River Cruises are among those being consulted. For a copy of the consultation and to share your thoughts call the council’s parks team on 0118 939 9045.

you'd better make more moorings, if you want city status, and also suitable toilets , along the canals, and also the river Thames. Especially for children,
