Indoor skatepark 'too costly'

March 09, 2010

Building an indoor skatepark or BMX track for young people in Lower Earley will not be possible because it would be “very expensive”, according to councillors.

Connor Deutrom submitted a question to Wokingham Borough Council for its meeting last month if an indoor facility could be provided to cater for local BMX and skateboard enthusiasts in bad weather.

However, Councillor Liz Siggery, executive member for corporate services, said in a written response to his question: “The council is committed to the provision of a wide range of sport and leisure facilities for all age groups across the borough.

“Building an indoor skate/BMX park in Lower Earley would be very expensive at a time when the council’s budgets are fully committed.”

The easiest way to get a park built would be to find some corporate sponsorship along side council money. Skateparks in america are built this way so why not here???

why dont the skaters and riders of Reading look for some corporate sponsorship. The Safe Spot Skate Spot idea in america is a perfect example.

I think therefore I'm pwned, the traffic lights in Winnersh were paid for by Segro, not the council, and didn't use any council money.

What happened to the outdoor BMX track planned for Lower Earley? Not heard anything about that in ages, is it happening?

Good point DM, friend of mine built an indoor skate park, on his own, cost him 10k excluding premises and it was a good one, kids loved it and vandalism in the area all but disappeared.

See spending our money on trying to pretend we live in a city instead of looking after the people who live in the town, it's a moral disgrace.

Any more expensive than years of doomed investigation about making the IDR one way?

Interesting, they have money to put up lots of traffic lights that aren't needed around winnersh triangle but not enough money to build some facilities to keeps kids busy and out of trouble.
