Barkham country park to be open by next spring

March 09, 2010

A new country park in Barkham is due to open next spring.

The land opposite Rooks Nest Farm in Barkham Ride will be transformed into a country park over the next year.

The project to provide Suitable Alternative Natural Green (SANG) space, is to be funded by developer contributions.

Wokingham Borough Council must provide the extra green space so it can go ahead with proposals to build thousands of homes in the borough over the next 15 years.

Councillor Gary Cowan, executive member for local and regional planning, delivered an update on the plans at a Wokingham Borough Council executive meeting on Thursday, February 18.

He said: “We are scheduled to start in July and August and want to open the country park in April next year.”

The country park is set to be around 50 acres and will have around 15,000 new native trees and shrubs planted around the site.

There will be a car park, footpaths and landscaping around the space.

Access will be gained to the park from the car park, and no access is planned from nearby Gilbert Way and Booth Drive.

Cllr Cowan said: “The creation of a new 50 acre country park is a fantastic addition to the borough for our residents.”

Country park will 'not benefit' village

Barkham Parish Council have opposed the green space though, saying it not unnecessary and because access is only from the car park rather than linking paths is not being designed for people in Barkham.

Wokingham is rapidly becoming just a sprawl of Reading and with this latest expansion there be virtually no space (green or otherwise) left between them. Developers greed and the insane population increase drive our Government is hell bent on will ensure our green heritage is completely destroyed. We're already the most densely populated country in Europe, when will it stop?
