Useless hairdryers put swimmers off early morning dips

A swimmer is calling for Carnival Pool’s previous hairdryers to be reinstated, saying early morning dips are becoming a thing of the past.

Karen Smith, who lives in Winnersh and regularly uses the swimming pool before work, says she has had to stop early-morning swims because the hairdryers at the pool are useless.

The hairdryers in Wellington Road were replaced with more modern flexi-tubes a year ago but have generated complaints about their effectiveness.

She said: “I seldom go for an early morning swim nowadays because you just cannot get your hair dry and looking reasonable for work afterwards.

“The hot flexi-tube gets so hot it makes my hand tingle but my hair stays damp.”

She said several other swimmers have also complained about the hair-drying facilities.

“We early morning swimmers are despairing!

“Why doesn’t the Carnival Pool want to encourage adults to the early swim by providing reasonable facilities?

“The current hairdryers replaced the hairdryers that we all complained about – yet these are the same design but even worse.

“I’m not sure how long they have been there, probably well over a year or more and they are definitely on the way out already.”

She said some parents are avoiding sending their children to parties in the winter as they cannot get their hair dry.

She said: “We just want normal hairdryers like we used to have – many folks will be likely to go back to swimming and Wokingham will be healthier.

“The town needs facilities that we can rely on so that we can have a nice swim and get to work on time and in a presentable manner.”

A Wokingham Borough Council spokesman said three of the four dryers are working and people there are facilities in place for people to dry their hair.

Puts the Haitian earthquake in perspective, that's for sure.

They may be facing a life of destitution, starvation and disease, but the honest burghers of Wokingham have to wrestle with sub-standard hair-dryers at public swimming pools on a daily basis....
